As the frangipanis start spilling their tropical scent onto the streets and the warmth of the sun tempts us into our first ocean swim of the year, we plough through our to do lists with a spring in our step knowing that summer is just around the corner. And that means one thing: it’s time to start planning your summer holiday.

The summer holiday holds a special place in the hearts of Australians. Whether it’s a family camping expedition to the Blue Mountains, a humble beach shack in Jervis Bay or bed and breakfast in Kangaroo Valley, the Australian summer holiday is where card games take on Olympic significance, sand gets in every crevice of the car, ice-creams melt at lightning speed and lifelong memories are made.

When planning your summer holiday, take time out to explore some of the incredible local purveyors and artisanal businesses across in NSW. For your decorating pleasure, we’ve scoured the state to pull together some of the best homewares and interiors stores, stocking local artworks and gifts, furniture and décor, fashion, kitchenware and a host of local treasures that will make it hard to leave empty handed.

Island Luxe – Established in 2007, this Bangalow store is based around the owner’s experience of living a nomadic life while travelling the world, aiming to recreate the feel of a luxurious gypsy lifestyle without pretension. From a peasant’s bed from Pakistan, an old leather oil pot from a gypsy tribe in India or a farmer’s work bench battered over time, each piece tells a story and carries the store’s ethos of minimalism and sustainability. They also collaborate with local artisans wherever possible to produce exclusive one-off accessories and furniture, making each piece unique. 62 Byron Street, Bangalow

Few and Far – Travelling the world every year as designers, Tara and Danny Solberg always dreamed of bringing everything they saw home.
